Utilized in cutting-edge aerospace equipment and on Formula One racecars, TeXtreme® has long been the preferred choice of Felt engineers for all of the company’s highest-performing bicycles. Most of the VR carbon models utilize TeXtreme® and its patented Spread Tow fabric consisting of flat tapes instead of traditional yarns of carbon fibers. When TeXtreme® is used in conjunction with Felt’s proprietary MMC and InsideOut construction methods, Felt engineers are able to ensure that more fiber and less resin is used in a given space, thereby reducing weight and allowing for a more finely tuned chassis.
The VR is built around endurance-oriented geometry, with relatively slack head and seat angles that ensure riders possess the confidence that comes from improved stability over the course of a long ride. A relatively tall stack measurement provides riders with a more upright handlebar position while still allowing them to forgo headset spacers. Starting from the ground up, Felt engineers meticulously ensured that each and every tube shape on the VR was theorized, modeled and tested via countless iterations to achieve both the optimal performance characteristics and endurance capabilities valued by adventure-seeking riders the world over.
Key to the VR’s meticulously tuned level of compliance is a rear triangle that utilizes seat stays being positioned outboard of the seat tube and, due to the utilization of disc brakes, forgoing a traditional brake bridge. Because the seat stays do not have to handle braking forces for a rim brake caliper, they have been tuned entirely to work in conjunction with the tapered seat tube profile to ensure maximum compliance. The VR’s front triangle and fork design were also developed to mitigate road vibrations, further reducing rider fatigue over an all-day excursion.
Recognizing the trend for wider tires and rims, Felt engineers designed the VR to accommodate the vast majority of high-performance road bike tires on the market today. Its frame boasts a 42mm tire clearance circle (total space between the frame’s chain stays). This allows for the use of a wider tire than many comparable road bikes available now and in the past. In the case of the VR and similar road bikes, ISO standards call for 6mm of clearance on either side of the tire, resulting in an original equipment tire specification of 30mm width or narrower.
Disc brakes are the new standard in road bike technology, providing more stopping power, greater modulation and more consistent performance than rim brakes, particularly in adverse weather conditions. The VR utilizes the Flat Mount disc brake standard for the best in performance and security, as well as clean aesthetics. Complementing the VR’s disc brakes are 12mm thru-axles, which provide a more secure interface over traditional quick-release skewers. Likewise, the VR’s thru-axles provide maximum concentricity and enhanced stiffness over quick-releases, all of which combine for increased power transfer and precise rear shifting.
Felt has collaborated with some of the world’s leading component makers to create an all-new standard of endurance road gearing. VR models feature a crankset design equipped with chainrings and cassettes optimized for maximum performance throughout an entire day of riding. This means that the VR provides the ideal climbing gear ratio of 1:1, which empowers riders to overcome variable terrain and gradients throughout an all-day climbing adventure, all without sacrificing the gearing necessary for fast road riding.
The VR features Felt’s most advanced internal cable management system, and it is compatible with every drivetrain on the market, from mechanical to wired electronic and wireless, and this includes both one-by (1x) and two-by (2x) groups that feature one or two chainrings, respectively. Cable ports are fully sealed for protection from the elements, preventing dirt and moisture from entering the frame. The VR’s front brake cable is routed internally through the fork to keep it securely in place. The VR’s cable management system is also compatible with dropper seatposts, allowing you to enjoy an increasingly popular aftermarket upgrade.
Thanks to its endurance-oriented geometry and disc brakes, the VR possesses superior all-weather versatility. To further enhance that versatility, Felt engineers developed a proprietary fender kit that seamlessly integrates with the VR frame. And whether it’s a spare tube, tool kit or extra nutrition products, all-day riding excursions may require extra supplies. The VR features a mounting location along the top tube for installing a “bento box” style storage bag. The two-bolt setup features standard water bottle cage spacing, which gives riders the freedom to utilize a wide selection of aftermarket storage solutions.
The longest and most adventurous rides occur at all hours of the day. And that’s why Felt incorporated a unique selection of high-visibility aesthetic accents throughout the VR. Handlebar tape developed in collaboration with one of Felt’s trusted component partners features a classically subdued style in bright daylight, yet produces a striking degree of reflectivity in low-light environments. Likewise, the VR frame includes several understated and refined graphic details that yield enhanced visibility to ensure both bike and rider are always in the spotlight.
The VR Series pushes the limits of what endurance road bikes are capable, and part of that comes from its unique selection of components that deliver the ultimate riding experience. The VR’s unique handlebars feature a 35mm diameter for maximum control and performance, and they’re paired with stems featuring a 35mm clamping interface. The bar offers a larger surface area that provides a more comfortable grip than a skinnier bar, which is particularly beneficial for long days on the bike or when riding on rough surfaces. This also stiffens the bike’s front-end for performance, offering better control, perfect for all-day riding adventures.
